Can Infrared Saunas Cause Cancer?

There are three types of Infrared wavelengths. Near, mid, and far-infrared. Near, mid, and far infrared wavelengths were studied by the International Commission on Non Ionizing Radiation Protection in 2006. They determined that skin cancer is not expected from exposure to Infrared radiation. They concluded that the increased skin temperature may reduce DNA repair efficiency in some people. This process does not cause cancer. Other agents that cause cancer may be initiated due to genetics or typical cell growth.

Infrared Saunas can actually stop the spread of malignant cancer cells.

A study published in the Journal of Cancer Science and Therapy found that after 30 days of far-infrared use, tumor infected mice saw reductions in their cancerous masses up to 86%. A person’s normal cells are essentially immune to infrared radiation in the far-infrared wavelength. Cancer cells on the other hand are “hyper-thermically” challenged. What this means is, a person using far-infrared wavelengths can systematically target cancer cells and slow or even halt the spread.

Can I still get cancer while using infrared saunas?

Cancer affects millions of people in the US alone. With no cure it is possible that anyone can be affected. Always consult a doctor before using far-infrared saunas as a treatment for cancer. Infrared Saunas cannot cause cancer. They can potentially slow or stop the spread in affected patients. There is no link between the soothing heat in infrared saunas and the creation of cancer.

Where did the myth come from?

The term Infrared Radiation, or IR, sounds dangerous. The story is as simple as a dangerous sounding description. We experience Infrared Radiation every second of every day. Quite simply, IR is heat. Heat that we feel from the sun is all around us, every hour of every day. Many people originally confused infrared radiation with ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet Radiation, or UV, can cause skin cancer or damage the eyes if looking directly into the sun. The myth stems from this confusion between the two. Remember, Infrared Rad is not bad. Ultraviolet is ultra violent.
