Infrared Sauna for Fibromyalgia

Infrared saunas are a great option for those suffering from fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition characterized by increased pain severity, fatigue, and cognitive issues like difficulty with concentration and memory. If you have experienced multiple irritable pain sites for more than 3 months, it is possible you may have fibromyalgia. Infrared sauna therapy can help to alleviate the pain associated with this condition by restoring normal autonomic nervous system function. In addition, the high levels of toxicity that often accompany fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue can be reduced through sweating in an infrared sauna.

Infrared sauna technology also allows for:

  • Interruption of pain signal transmission
  • Healthy levels of cortisol (fight or flight hormone)
  • Heart stimulation that sends more blood to your cells
  • Better circulation, less tension and headaches
  • Reduced inflammation and joint stiffness

Science Backing the Use of Infrared Saunas for Fibromyalgia

While sitting in a sauna, the infrared light spectrum works with human physiology to slowly draw you out of a stress response. Infrared light also uses penetrative rays to improve energy conversion and better circulation as your body detoxifies. Sauna therapy elevates your heart rate, allowing for good blood flow into inflammation areas. From improved circulation, there is a reduction in inflammation, and therefore pain.

Pain is a major issues associated with fibromyalgia. This may be caused by cell damage and mitochondrial dysfunction. Since the mitochondria function as the engine of the cells, if they aren’t working then the body lacks energy for muscles and blood circulation to work properly. In a study published by Internal Medicine, 13 female fibromyalgia patients received Waon therapy. Waon therapy is another term for thermal therapy using a dry sauna. All patients’ pain was reduced by about 50% after the first session and the healing effects stabled after 10 treatments. After the experiment, pain scores remained low during the 14 month observation period. This shows that infrared saunas can be a promising therapy for treating patients with fibromyalgia.

In a study conducted by the American College of Rheumatology, fibromyalgia patients were instructed to do a combination of sauna therapy and underwater exercises to demonstrate the positive effects of regular infrared therapy. 44 female patients received 12 weeks of thermal therapy. All patients reported 31-77% pain reduction at the end of the program and remained stable during the 6 month observation period. Short and long-term pain and fibromyalgia impact improved from the use of sauna therapy.

Does Infrared Heat Help Fibromyalgia?

Another major issue that people with fibromyalgia have suffered from is chronic fatigue syndrome. A Waon therapy study conducted by Internal Medicine tested the effects of infrared dry sauna treatment on chronic fatigue syndrome patients. 10 inpatients received treatment for 4 weeks. Findings showed perceived fatigue decreased after therapy while anxiety, depression, fatigue and performance status improved. Based on these results, infrared sauna therapy may be an effective way to treat CFS.

Effective cerebral blood flow is important for proper muscle functioning. Internal Medicine reported another study evaluating the changes in cerebral blood flow before and after infrared therapy. 11 patients diagnosed with CFS participated in the study, and all 11 reported reduced symptoms. Improvement in clinical symptoms was linked to an increase in cerebral blood flow. When patients have abnormalities in the prefrontal region, orbitofrontal region and right temporal lobe, Waon therapy can be used to improve cerebral function since it increases cerebral blood flow.

On the detoxification effects of infrared saunas, Dr. Rachel West stated “Detoxification is important because it strengthens the body’s immune system … [and] has also been shown to be helpful with colitis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia …” You should always consult with your doctor before trying a new health treatment. Infrared sauna therapy is safe for the most part, but if you have preexisting health conditions there could be complications or special precautions.
